Shifting from a Culture of Excess to a Culture of Access
Shifting from a Culture of Excess to a Culture of Access There is a Tosh.0 episode in which a faux-outraged Daniel Tosh decides to burn thousands of books during a mock protest. He takes to the streets, gasoline and matches in hand, and, in the skits anti-climactic zenith, he sets his Kindle aflame. Sure, it was silly gesture, but apropos in the context of todays techno-cultural landscape. There was a time, not long ago, when if we wanted immediate access to a large number of movies, we had to own hundreds of DVDs. If we wanted the ability to listen to a particular song on cue, our shelves needed to overflow with compact discs. And if we wanted to look smart, we needed a home library teeming with the oeuvres of all the most notable names in literature. Today, of course, we neednt own a single DVD or CD or print book to have access to essentially unlimited options. With the click of a button, we can view any movie ever made, listen to any song ever produced, or read any page thats ever been printed. Thats not to say that theres anything inherently wrong with the physical artifacts themselves. Its just that, like the record albums of yesteryear, we are able to own less in the deliberate pursuit of experiencing more. Much like a hipsters impressive vinyl collection, a well-curated bookshelf holds significantly more meaning than, say, clinging to a random collection of paperbacks just in case we might read them someday in some nonexistent future. The same can be said for DVDs and CDs and whats next? (Lets not even mention all those forgotten VHS and cassette tapes collecting dust in the basement.) These relics (movies, music, books) are just the beginning. Imagine all the possibilities we will unveil as we shift from a culture of ownershipâ"a culture obsessed with personally owning every object we can get our hands onâ"to a culture of access, in which every citizen has unlimited access to virtually everything virtually. You see, most of us never owned private basketball courts, bowling alleys, or swimming pools as children. And yet we had access to these activities by way of our local communities (YMCA, public schools, parks). And now in todays culture, access trumps ownership more than ever. With the rapid expansion of our sharing economy (Uber, Airbnb, Freecycle) were living in a world thats completely different from our Industrial Age predecessors. This is great news. But it doesnt mean that we must eschew personal ownership. In fact, the opposite is true: with access to the non-physical world at our fingertips, the material things we own become more intentional, more deliberate, more meaningful. Its a beautiful paradox. Technology has made this possible. No longer must we hoard. Rather, with fewer physical possessions but greater access to the things that matter most, we can worry less about consuming, more about creating and experiencing. Comparing the Tragic Hero in Things Fall Apart and Heart...
The Tragic Hero in Things Fall Apart and Heart of Darkness A tragic hero could be considered a noble person with a fatal flaw or an opponent of society who is willing to take action that sensible people might applaud but never perform themselves. In Chinua Achebes Things Fall Apart and Joseph Conradss Heart of Darkness, two characters, Okonkwo and Kurtz, have some qualities which could categorize them as tragic heroes. However, only the readers interpretation of the characters actions will determine if they are tragic heroes or not. In his Ibo society, Okonkwo would certainly be considered a noble person. Not only has he worked his way up from poverty to become one of the leading men of Umuofia, but he hasâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦But he was not the man to go about telling his neighbors that he was in error, (Achebe 31). Okonkwo has too much pride to admit to his mistake, which only reveals his insecurity. One of the most horrendous acts in the book Okonkwo committed re- sulted from his fear. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak, (Achebe 61). Ikemefuna, a boy who had become like a son to Okonkwo, was sentenced to be killed. Since Okonkwo did not want the other tribesmen to think he was weak and incapable of action, he killed the boy. Perhaps Okonkwos greatest sign of weakness occurs at his death. After killing a white messenger, he commits suicide. Now, people who commit sui- cide usually cannot cope with their world; they are too weak to handle their prob- lems. When Okonkwo killed himself, he had accepted his weakness as a flaw and punished himself. Before Okonkwo hanged himself, he voiced his disgust against the white people. He often talked of physically disbanding the white men from Umuofia. Many of the older and traditional folk of the clan agreed with him, while others joined the whites. When a town meeting was summoned to determine what to do with the white men, Okonkwo stated, I shall fight alone if I choose, (Achebe 201). If no- body would join him, Okonkwo would try to act so others might follow. The Barbie Birthday By Alison Townsend And Let Women Fight...
The two essays, The Barbie Birthday by Alison Townsend and Let Women Fight by Megan H. Mackenzie, talk about women and girls in todayââ¬â¢s world. Both essays focus on the depiction of females, but at different points in their life. The Barbie Birthday talks about the author as a little girl and her excitement of receiving a Barbie from her future stepmother. The story is vague, which help account for the several prompts questioning the piece. The other essay, Let Women Fight, speaks of the restrictions placed on women serving in the U.S. Military. The piece is quite longer than The Barbie Birthday, but it still allows for the prompts to be answered. These prompts focus on what the essay has left out, which claims have no evidence, and whatâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦She includes quotes from men and senators, but as an article that is meant to allocate women the right to fight, military women should have been referred to much more. While it is important to have the facts she li sted, actual, multiple first-hand experiences would have made the article stronger. In addition, the author leaves out the opinion of men currently in the military. As changing of the combat regulation will affect men as well, more military men should have been quoted. While the piece does a good job of getting across the point, a few extra sentences would have done a lot. Equally important to leaving information out, the essays sometimes put forward claims with no evidence. The story The Barbie Birthday has several of these instances. At one point the author mentions, ââ¬Å"All Barbie had to do was glance back once and I followed, casting my lot with every girl on every block of America, signing on for lifeâ⬠(Townsend 265). While it may have only been a hyperbole, stating that every girl in America was obsessed with Barbie has no evidence and is clearly untrue. Also, the author also mentions how the Barbie lead her back into the world (Townsend 265). Alison Townsend failed to tell the readers how a lifeless doll had this impact and what she actually meant by that statement. Let Women Fight is also guilty of stating claims without evidence. At one point the author says, ââ¬Å"To put it bluntly, there are physically fit, tough

Critical Appreciation Essay Example For Students
Critical Appreciation Essay The Explosion by Philip Larkin and Six Young Men by Ted Hughes Compare and contrast the evolution of the poetsââ¬â¢ feelings in these poems, looking carefully at the language and poetic effects which communicate most effectively. The poems ââ¬Å"The Explosionâ⬠by Philip Larkin and ââ¬Å"Six Young Menâ⬠by Ted Hughes are both about death. Philip Larkinââ¬â¢s poem is about a mining explosion which occurred in 1969, and Ted Hughes deals with men killed during the Great War. We could as well say that ââ¬Å"Six Young Menâ⬠is about war because the poet exposes the horrors of war in the way that the men died. Firstly, both poems also have a relevant title. Philip Larkin informs us immediately of the tragedy by giving ââ¬Å"The Explosionâ⬠as a title to his poem and as well as by repeating it in the first line. Ted Hughes chose to adapt the title to the language of his poem, by using three monosyllabic words : ââ¬Å"Six Young Menâ⬠. Secondly, as said previously, both of these poems have a main theme in common : death. However, they express it through completely opposite techniques. Indeed, ââ¬Å"The Explosionâ⬠hasnââ¬â¢t any rhyming pattern and, as rhyme is usually used to show a flow of events or words, it can be seen as if the explosion actually interrupts this flow. On the contrary, ââ¬Å"Six Young Menâ⬠is composed of rhymes and this brings structure and symmetry to the poem. The language in ââ¬Å"The Explosionâ⬠is casual and conversational, whereas ââ¬Å"Six Young Menâ⬠is rather based on rhythm, with its numerous monosyllabic and simple words. They are both regularly structured ; Ted Hughes wrote five stanzas all composed of nine verses, and Philip Larkin wrote eight stanzas each of them composed of three verses, except that he added a concluding line, by the way very significant : the fact that this last line is isolated highlights the positive image of ââ¬Å"the eggs unbrokenâ⬠, which emphasises the optimistic tone of the end. It offers hope, optimism for the future, and proves that life goes on. This last statement is actually the opposite of what Ted Hughes tells the reader through his poem. Indeed, its key object, the photograph, is a reminder of those who have died and that all of us will also die ; there isnââ¬â¢t any escape from that ââ¬Å"horrorâ⬠. The smiling from a photograph is the fearful image of what will be left of us. So this photograph is central to the poem because it generates the thoughts and feelings expressed. ââ¬Å"The Explosionâ⬠is divided into two. The first five stanzas ââ¬âwhich, by the way, are the only ones to end up with a full stop- talk about what happened, and the rest of the poem deals with what is currently happening. Ted Hughes chose to end each of his stanzas by a shocking and abrupt statement ; these lines always remind the fact, the reality : ââ¬Å"Six months after this picture they were all dead.â⬠, ââ¬Å"Closer than their hope; all were killed.â⬠are two of them. Another similarity between the poems is the reference to nature. In ââ¬Å"The Explosionâ⬠there are the ââ¬Å"larkââ¬â¢s eggsâ⬠or the sun dimmed as in a heat-haze for example, and in ââ¬Å"Six Young Menâ⬠there is especially a contrast between human life and nature, with ââ¬Å"that valley has not changed its soundâ⬠. This contrast emphasises the brevity of human life compared with the landscape. It also shows that the length of human life has no impact on nature. To conclude, these poems have a few similarities such as their relevant title, their main theme death, their regular structure and the imagery of nature, but also a striking difference, which is the message the poet communicates to the reader. Indeed, Philip Larkinââ¬â¢s message, through this elegy, is much more positive and gives hope for life, while Ted Hughes clearly states that we will all die and that there isnââ¬â¢t any escape from death.

Immortal Gods Essays - Greek Mythology, Discworld Gods,
Immortal Gods By Joshua Vukelich. In the immoral world of Ovid's The Metamorphoses the gods stand out like the characters of a western dime novel. A hero, usually is dressed with their purple robes held together with golden straps, that classifies them as the royal or hierarchical gods. On the other hand, you have the villain, who dresses in dark colored clothing. Also, the villain can appear dressed in white with purple clothing which exemplifies the royalty of their underworld. The gods meet each other on a day to day basis discussing the future of someone other than themselves in their muggy saloon of Olympus. Olympus to the gods is the pulse and heart beat of their world. At this saloon in Olympus the usual takes place, the gambling of moral souls, while speculating the beautiful female that they will posses that evening, and so on. Also, you have the local disputes between the commonly known of the gods over disputes of pride, or of land an possessions, which usually ends up in a speculative fighting event of curses and destruction. Some analogies may be disputed as to how and where they derived? I will try to place them as best as possible into the spotlight of the western period. Before I begin I like to bring out a formula that will disrupt my defense, which by the end I would like to modify and re-state is as an "what if the gods lived in the western period with their mythological power?" The Western formula, which tends to portray the frontier as the "meeting point between civilization and savagery," because the clash of civilization ("law and order") with savagery, whether represented by Indians or lawless outlaws, generates dramatic excitement and striking antithesis without raising basic questions about society or about life in general. In the perspective of moral and immoral beings that Ovid presents in a mythological poetic voice translates well in an analytical western perspective. The image that comes to mind when placing the immoral gods of Olympus in a western setting is as difficult but humorous. First, is the gods, that is where do you place them, and in what category? We need to distinguish from the hero to the villain, while justifying the accurate setting for their events. Second, we need to identify how we are going to place the gods the western setting. Since they all appear to constantly meet and challenge each other the proper placement would be a dirty saloon in a the famous city of Olympus. This saloon will represent Olympus, where the travelers and locals will converse, gamble with the lives of the mortals, and speculate the dancing show girls of immortal goddess. However, in the immortal saloon of gods the education and strategies of fighting will differ from that of the western formula. The gods are no uneducated savages nor villains of low IQ. No, our gods are like top level executives or politicians running our country to their best. The gods will fight out their battle with superior levels of sophisticated planning. Through their battles instead of the help of dragons, curses, swords, shield, and other earth related objects that will assist them in battle, a six-piece shooter can be supplemented. The doors of the saloon stand as a symbol, a gateway between the immortal and mortal world. This door is the fuel of conflicts where the furies and quarrels will meet on a daily basis. What would be the purpose of the west or the gods if they lived one day without some form of destruction or curse? Through the same doors the servants will bring them their daily sacrifices and festive meals that fuel their next move. Mortals feared the gods so therefore, sacrifices where necessary in pleasing the mighty and strong. Sacrifices of animals kept the gods content, as like it did for the local real estate tycoon, collecting royalties for being who he was, and the fear he instilled into the ranchers souls of losing their possessions and dignity. It is almost as if the mythology and western scenes portrayed themselves in a similar fashion of settings, except with and upgrade. You could describe the difference as in a traveler who needed a room, and two hotels where in the same vicinity and at the same price. However, one was the Hilton and the other was a Motel Six, they are both hotels, except one is of a finer upgraded class and quality of service, which means that the level of living would be

America And Romes Struggles essays
America And Rome's Struggles essays Compare the early Roman struggle for independence to that of colonial Americas. What similarities do you see in the Roman and colonist outlook on their future government? There are many similarities between America and Romes attempts at independence. First, a higher party oppressed both. For the Romans, it was the Etruscans, while it was the British for the colonists. Both also shape how Romans and Americans lived their lives. In the sixth century B.C., the Etruscans moved south across the Tiber River and conquered Rome. They set up a monarchy that lasted for more than a hundred years. The Etruscans had an enormous political, cultural, and social effect on early Roman culture. The Etruscans adopted many of their ideas from the Greeks, including the Phoenician alphabet, and incorporated many of the Olympian Gods into their religion. The Etruscans also taught the Romans how to the arch in the building and also how to set up forums. In 509 B.C., the Romans overthrew the Etruscan monarchy and developed a republic. In a republic, the citizens elected the representatives to run the government. The American Revolution (1775-1783) was the conflict between the 13 American Colonies and Great Britain. The first war between the two, the Revolutionary War, resulted in America gaining independence from its mother country, Britain. Then in 1787, the Constitution was laid out by the American government. This led to the formation of the representative democracy that is still used by our government today. The similarities between the two are fairly clear. Both Rome and the Colonies felt that they were being held down for too long under a monarchy and that they did not receive enough rights. They eventually gained enough support to lead a revolution against its oppressor. Once the English and Etruscans were defeated, the people set up governments that gave the average citizen a say in politic ...

Introduction Public Procurement refers to the process of purchasing of goods and services on behalf of the public authority, through government agencies. Public procurement involves government expenditure that is aimed at securing inputs and resources in order to achieve objectives, hence establish a significant impact on the crucial key holders and the society. Besides, government purchasing occurs through both domestic and international trade. In fact, about ten to fifteen percent of the GDP involves government expenditure on procurement; t herefore, public procurement makes a significant contribution to the global economy1. Transparency has been considered an essential standard that facilitates improvement of public procurement; in fact, it involves a procurement process that is open for public scrutiny. Furthermore, this facilities competition, thereby increasing the efficiency of the process and the threat posed by issues such as corruption are alleviated. Transparency enables people to monitor public bodies, thereby holding these organizations accountable for their undertakings. The main objective of transparent public procurement is to facilitate fairness, competition and economic value in the process; this objective is achieved through effective and efficient procurement process that is developed by the principals monitoring the process. Apparently, sufficient controls are incorporated in order to promote competition, thereby reducing the risk associated with corruption, fraud, mismanagement and wastage of public resources. In this case, transparency is considered to be an effective tools aimed at hampering corruption and ensuring that there is value for money2. In addition, transparency is employed in different ways along with different practices such as advances publication of procurement plans, procurement policies are published, tender notices are advertised, the criteria for evaluation is disclosed, there are payment of prices and contract awards are published. a. Transparency Needed to Foster Competition International liberalization is applied in fostering competition among public procurement markets. Besides, competition can also be facilitated through participation in WTO Agreement on Government Procurement (GPA)3. In this case, competition can be fostered in four different ways, which include provision of vehicles by GPA in order to facilitate progressive opening of parties to markets in order for the to engage in international competition. On the other hand, there are other provis ions that involve agreement focusing on offering information based on framework aimed that ensuring that the process is transparent4. Fostering competition involves signing agreements with GPA parties in order to facilitate establishment of domestic reviews and operations, where participants are allowed to challenge decisions that are deemed questionable. Therefore, decision made by national procurement authorities should be subjected to review by the competitors in order to avoid unfairness or discrimination. In addition, competition can

DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
DISTRIBUTIVE JUSTICE - Essay Example After pulling some strings, his family was able to arrange a liver for Krampitz. The donor heard about the need of his liver through the media campaign launched by Krampitzââ¬â¢s family. However, a liver transplant only bought Krampitz another eight months. Doctors had already foretold that due to the aggressive nature of cancer, the disease will not be cured even after a transplant. At the time Krampitz got a donor, there were 16000 other better suited candidates on the UNOS wait list. Krampitz was able to jump this queue of 16000, better suited candidates because of his publicity stunt. The question is, was it ethically correct for Krampitz to jump ahead of so many people only because he could? This publicity stunt may have found a donor who would not have been found otherwise but the ethical dilemma of distribution of organs is still there. This dilemma when viewed under Distributive justice can provide a better understanding and analysis of situations such as the one mentioned above. What Krampitz did is legal, technically speaking he never breached any law (Delvoye, 2004). It all boils down to the matter of ethics, how well Krampitzââ¬â¢s case weighs on the moral scale? Distributive justice pertains to ââ¬Ëfairââ¬â¢ distribution of economic resources among widespread community (Maiese, 2003). This distribution revolves around three factors, number or resources, the procedure and the pattern of distribution (Maiese, 2003). Distributive justice applies to organ donation because there are simply not enough for everyone (Center for Bioethics, 2004). Going back to Krampitzââ¬â¢s case, the procedure, pattern as well as the number of resources (healthy livers available for transplant) all seem to be against Krampitz. What Krampitz did is a violation of ethics, knowing that he was dead anyway, regardless of the transplant. Still he jumped ahead of 1600 people and got himself a healthy liver. Critically speaking, for his own survival he had to take e very chance to save himself which is not wrong. But when youââ¬â¢re a citizen, you are part of the social fabric, people are knitted together to keep the society strong. Otherwise, the law of ââ¬Ësurvival of the fittestââ¬â¢ prevails and that means chaos. The matter of distributive justice in healthcare is not a matter of consequential theory. It is not about creating an equitable society; it is about what is in the best interest (mutual interest) of everybody. The idea of Distributive Justice arises in cases of organ donation because there is a wide gap between the supply and demand of human organs. Human organs for transplantation purposes are very scarce. This shortage begs a more just distribution of organs. Distributive justice aims to provide a fair distribution of scarce resources such as human organs. The distributive justice theory employs various criteria to judge and rightfully prefer one individual over another in matters of organ distribution. The theory measur es the overall utility of choosing the recipient of an organ. There is another side to this story, the supporters of Krampitzââ¬â¢s case. They say that the media campaign launched by Krampitz found a person who with his own will agreed to donate the liver, therefore adding another donor to the pool of donors. Had this person not reached by Krampitzââ¬â¢s family, he would have chosen not donate at all. This makes the case very strong for Krampitz. Krampitz identified

AirAsia Berhad (AirAsia) | Analysis
AirAsia Berhad (AirAsia) | Analysis Introduction AirAsia Berhad (AirAsia) is one of the leading low cost airlines in South East Asia which has expanded rapidly since 2001. The company is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and has successfully positioned itself in customers mind through the simple slogan Now Everyone Can Fly (AirAsia, 2009). The company is currently valued at approximately RM2.7 billion and has a total of 60 aircrafts that fly to over 50 domestic and international destinations with over 400 domestic and international flights daily (Euromonitor International, 2009). The operation for the short and long haul are handled by AirAsia and its sister company, AirAsia X Sdn Bhd (AirAsia X). AirAsia aims to establish itself as a leading low cost carrier in market by valuing its customers through cost advantages created by operational effectiveness and efficiency. More customers are able to fly taking into consideration the low fare charges as AirAsia capture segments of customers that previously could not afford the airlines fare. Whether the strategy exploits the companys key resources Each organisation is unique in terms of it resources and capabilities and the key to success merely depend on its ability to find or create a competence that is distinctive (Teece et.al.,1997). The Resource Based View (RBV) combines two perspectives, the internal analysis of phenomena within an organisation and an external analysis of the industry and its competitive environment (Collis and Montgomery, 1995). It goes beyond the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis by integrating internal and external perspectives. The ability of an organisations resources to present competitive advantages could not be determine without taking into considerations the boarder competitive concept. Barney (1995) indicated that organisations resources and capabilities must be evaluated in terms of value, rarity, imitability or non-substitutability (VRINE model). The value of the resources and capabilities interacts with the market sources and will differ based on time and industry. The three fundamental market forces; scarcity, demand and appropriability determines the value of a resources and capabilities (Collis and Montgomery, 1995). In order to answer the question of value, organisation could identify whether the resources and capabilities are able to meet market demand. As for AirAsia, the organisation relies on its human resources and management capabilities wherein these two components have satisfied the value requirement as it has been able to meet the demand for the Low Cost Carrier (LCC) market. The resources and capabilities own by AirAsia are homogenous in the market however aspect such as work culture and innovative routes differs it from the competitors. In applying the RBV concept, AirAsia has a competitive parity based on its valuable and not rare resources and capabilities. Immitability is something generic in the airline in dustry as aircraft, fast turnarounds time and others are easily duplicate. One of AirAsias imitable characteristics is path dependency wherein a characteristics of resources is developed and/or accumulated through a unique series of time. AirAsias work culture of openness between employees as well as the leadership from its Chief Executive Officer is something have been built up over a period of time which is difficult to duplicate. Moreover, the high capital requirement for market entry is another factor that leads to difficulty to imitate the resources and capabilities. It is undeniable that the said resources and capability be imitated as competitors will identify the same however it will take time and meanwhile, AirAsia gain the competitive advantages. Having a control and exploiting the resources and capabilities provides competitive advantages to the organizations (Carpenter and Sanders, 2009). AirAsia has exploited it resources and capabilities which is shown in the financial performance. AirAsia has gradually increased its performance throughout the years. AirAsias s net profit for the 3rd quarter of 2009 totalled RM130 million ($38.4 million) which is sustained by rising passenger numbers and income from add-on services. The profit achieved was a turnaround from a RM466 million ($137 million) net loss in the same period last year (www.airasia.com). The fit of the strategy to current industry conditions The competitive environment consists of many factors that are particularly relevant to an organisations strategy. Analysing the external environment particularly the industry is a starting point for firms to develop a strategy. Porters five forces include the overall structure rather than focusing to any one element. However the forces are not stagnant which tendency to change may occur. AirAsia operates within the airline industry and forces that are driven in the industry would identify the strength and weaknesses of the organisation. There is potential market in the Asia for LCC due to the rapid economic and disposable incomes growth. Infrastructure such as high speed trains and highways has yet to meet the high standard level and therefore customers tend to choose the air as mode of transportation. Hence, threats of substitutes are low as the geographical structure of Asia has made air travel the viable, efficient and convenient mode of transportation. Looking into this scenario, AirAsia entered the airline industry concentrating on the LCC and noted that at the initial stage there were less rivalry but as the industry grows, the rivalry among established firms become higher partly due to price issues. AirAsias main competitors are Firefly, Tiger Airways and Jetstar Asia. Knowing the said changes, AirAsia applied the adaptation process (Hanan Freeman, 1984) by expanding its operation to long haul services to various destinations. Moreover, AirAsia realise the price is destructive and try to avoid direct price c ompetition and try to create a friendly competition environment. As there is positive growth in the airline industry, full service airline carriers have refocused its operation related to costs and yields as it is seen as a requirement to maintain profitability (Graham and Vowles, 2006). There is possibility of new entrance by other LCC which creates further competition in the industry. For example, Firefly set up by Malaysia Airline System Berhad is a part of LCC industry in Malaysia that has adapted AirAsias low cost concept. However, it would not be a threat to AirAsia as Hanan Freeman (1984) highlighted it is difficult to imitate as tacit amount of knowledge is required on the targeted firm. The high capital requirement and government barriers air service agreement can act as barriers to entry. Due to significant growth within the industry, demand for additional aircraft has increased and suppliers will be in a powerful position. It was reported that Asia accounts for 40% of new aircraft orders for Boeing and Airbus and seat capacity on LCC worldwide has more than doubled in the past four years (Shameem, 2006). Due to few players, Boeing and Airbus and lack of competition in the market, the bargaining power of suppliers are low. Consequently there is not much competition in terms of pricing occurring between the two companies so an airline carrier will have to accept an offer from one of the suppliers. The bargaining power for buyers is low as there is no room to bargain for cheaper tickets as AirAsia provides the lowest price compared to other carriers. The biggest threats for AirAsia are the rivalry and risk of entry with the existing and potential competitors. LCC business is viable and there is healthy profitability provided AirAsia continuously improves itself and is flexible in the challenging market. The sustainability of the differentiators Porter (1996) indicated that to outperform rivals, an organisation need to deliver greater value to customers or/and build comparative value at a lower cost. The airline industry is at the growing stage and therefore stiff competition from existing and new LCC is expected in the future. In order to sustain its competitive advantage, AirAsia needs to leverage its competency in creating cost advantages. At present, AirAsia differentiates by providing substantially low fares with no frills concept by offering innovative routes. Murray (1988) indicated that there is uncertainty for sustainable differentiation to be achieved through product innovation and suggested that the area that could be concentrated for the said differentiation is quality and service. While, Porter (1996) highlighted that positioning are successful based on activity system and simple consistency between each activity aligning with the organisation strategy. AirAsia builds it brand name by providing a good quality service at a low price. During inception, AirAsia focused on internal destinations and have further entered the international destinations. AirAsia X is differentiated by its long haul LCC as customers would not need to look at different carriers to reach different destinations at a lowest price. It is based on the same no frills service model wherein the price is 80% lower than its competitor together with additional services that requires customer to pay additional payment such as food, entertainment and others. AirAsia also seek to create excitement amongst their customers with the range of innovative and personalized service such as self check-in. Due to AirAsias success in the industry, competition might one to adapt the companys business model. However, AirAsia had some advantages over its competitors by the advantage of experience and its brand enjoyed good recognition. AirAsia gain from the first mover advantage which allows it to establish itself before competition perceive further in this low cost segment, apart from competition that already exists across segments (low cost vs full service carriers). AirAsia has the strength to lay down the rules and framework in the industry for business and operational suitability. Through AirAsia philosophy of Now Everyone Can Fly, AirAsia has embarked a revolution in air travel with more and more people around the region choosing AirAsia as their preferred choice of transport. As Air Asia continuously strives to promote air travel, AirAsia also seek to create excitement amongst their guests with they range of innovative and personalized service. Moreover customer loyalty is build by the differentiation which could act as a defense against rivalry (Eng, 1994). Whether the elements of the strategy are consistent and aligned with the strategic position Strategy works as a driver in a firm in achieving goals and objectives (Carpenter and Sanders, 2009). AirAsias five strategy elements are as follows: Porter (1996) presented three generic strategies that an organisation could use to overcome the five forces and achieve competitive advantage. However, there were studies resulting that adapting one or more forms of competitive advantage will outperform better (Murray, 1988). In the LCC segment, cost is the competitive priority and it determines market position. In lieu of this, Airasia has applied the focused cost leadership strategy wherein it targets on specific markets; price sensitive customers as well as lowering its overall costs (Flouris and Walker, 2005). With the positive growth in the LCC, it will create opportunity to others to enter the market. Competition between carriers using the same business model will inevitably be intense. One of the major pitfall against attempting to differentiate is by trying to combine low cost and differentiation strategy by starting to add frills in its business model. However, by applying the said strategy, carriers have lost their source of competitive advantage by narrowing the strategic cost gap. Every frill or service adds to cost and reduced the strategic cost gap, thus curbing the flexibility to offer innovative price deals. Murray (1988) disagrees that cost structure is vital in relation to the output performance compared to the price sensitivity. Factors such as economy of scale and quality of management teams within the organization could be the benchmark for cost leadership. Under the cost leadership strategy, level of operation efficiency is vital as it assist in achieving cost advantages than the rivals by searching continuous areas for cost reduction along its value chain that leads to economies of scale (Eng, 1993). AirAsia increases its efficiency through increased route network and its operating activities by adapting cost optimising techniques such as quick turnaround times and maximizing of flight utilisation for its aircrafts (Shari, 2003). As the result from efficient operation, it minimizes the cost that is then passed on to customers so that affordable air travel can become a reality. In 2005, the cost per available seat mile (ASK) for Airasia was only 0.3 compared to the next lowest valu e from 0.6 being Firefly (www.airasia.com). AirAsia took advantage from the existence of e-commerce which is cheaper and easier technique in providing information about products and services. Furthermore, it gives a better and more convenient way of promoting the companys product and services. The cost related to web is very low compared to other methods like advertisement on television. AirAsia has taken advantage from this method to reduce the cost of operations that leads to operating on a low rate. Malaysia government has supported AirAsia through the opening of the LCC terminal in Kuala Lumpur International Airport which enhanced its competitive edge by reducing costs and better logistic planning (Euromonitor International, 2009). Competitors tend to know how big the market is and how good the opportunity is in Asia. Therefore, there is threat by competitors which could imitate AirAsias low cost base. Most of the competitors have the same concept of no frills and low price strategy and will continuously try to reduce its costs than AirAsia in order to gain sustainability in the market. The challenge for AirAsia is to reduce cost effectively which it is difficult for the competitors to copy. Possible issues associated with implementation Strategy formulation and implementation are interdependent with the objectives being a coherent set of strategy elements and implement levers (Carpenter and Sanders, 2009). In order to succeed in the LCC segment, AirAsia will need to maintain its low cost elements in their business design as it is critical to the long term success. The main reason is because the more gap between arises between the competiting airlines, the more flexibility will be available to offer lower price and gain market share. An extended route system will most certainly be a key differentiator and to sustain its competitive advantages, resources and capabilities need to be analysed further. Around the world, it has been observed that low cost airlines pursuing a generic business design have emerged as the most successful. Conclusion AA actual main strength was based in its innovative ways to keep the cost low which was hard to imitate. AirAsia has indicated that synergies between the internal and external factors could develop a competitive advantage. This has allowed AirAsia to positioned and be the market leader in the LCC. The brand name brand equity is a major strength that AirAsia must successfully capitalize. Bibliography Barney J.B. A Path to Education Essay example -- Teaching School Philosophy Essays
A Path to Education Life is unpredictable and there are an infinite number of paths for one to choose from as they journey through life. One ââ¬Å"trailâ⬠that seems to be a popular choice to travel is that of an educator. Why is this? What makes the sharing of knowledge so special? Perhaps there is an unparalleled joy in enlightening someone else. Perhaps it is a combination of unlimited elements that drives individuals to be educators. And perhaps there is no one sure answer to these questions. One thing is for sure, our world has seen its share of tremendous and inspiring teachers come and go with the passing years and generations of people. Unfortunately, this world has also seen its share of educators who were not so noticeable and effective. Again, I ask why is this? What makes some teachers more effective and inspiring than others? Could the difference be discovered through viewing their individual philosophies on education? My personal conclusion to this question is a resounding YES. It is an educatorââ¬â¢s philosophy on teaching that makes the difference. Up to this point in life, Iââ¬â¢ve simply been a student of this world, but as I move forward in life I aspire to cross the line that all before me have crossed to become educators. How will I achieve this? More importantly, will my personal philosophy elevate me to become an inspiring and encouraging teacher? And most importantly, what exactly is my philosophy on education? In a general sense, I simply hope to look at each child I teach as an individual and to make the best situation for each child. I will achieve this goal by developing my own views on the nature of students, the nature of knowledge, the purpose of public education, teaching met... ... relative to that time period. No two educators are the same, and no two students are the same. Somewhere in the balance of teaching and learning there is a place where educators and students can come together and pass and receive knowledge in a creative and fun way. I feel that my personal philosophy can take my students and I to that place. Being an educator is the road I have chosen, and while the path I will walk will be unique it draws from the successful paths of educators that have come before me. I realize my philosophy is not set in stone and will change as I am exposed to yet more teachers. More importantly, it may change as I, myself, begin to teach. There is no hard and fast evidence claiming that my philosophy is better than any others, but I truly feel it provides a model that will enable me to be the best teacher I can be.

Madame Bovary Personal Response
In part two of Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert we see Emmaââ¬â¢s development as a character in a negative way. Emmaââ¬â¢s development is seen as she embarks on a path to moral and financial corruption all for a search of love and passion. The passion and love Emma seeks cannot be found in the reality of that time causing her to feel imprisoned in society with Charles whom she has no passion or lust for. To Emma love is defined as lustful, spontaneous action which she only reads about in her romance novels. SHe learns to fulfill this inner lust by undertaking in adultery with different men.Throughout this section of the novel we see the emotions Emma encounters, guilt, anger, lust, passion and spiritual longing. ââ¬Å"The more Emma became aware of her love, the more she suppressed it. She would have liked Leon to guess at itâ⬠¦ â⬠[p. 86] This quote shows the change is Emmaââ¬â¢s character from part one due to the fact that in part one she only longed for such a r elationship and what she read in books and took pity on herself while now she has taken action by committing adultery. When Emma first meets Leon there is a spark and common interests emerge unlike between Emma and Charles. This is seen in the quote ââ¬Å"Their Eyes indeed were full of more serious conversation; and, while they were struggling in search of banal phrases, each felt assailed by the same langour; it was like a murmur from the soulâ⬠¦ â⬠[p. 88] Emmaââ¬â¢s Lust for Leon is an example of the commencement of her thoughts of adultery actions, once Leon leaves she becomes even less satisfied by Charles than before and continues to seek for that same love she had for Leon. She goes to such extremes with love due to her idea of love coming from novels, this is seen when she considers ruining after Leo after he had left for Paris. This part of the novel is seen as Emmaââ¬â¢s attempt at filling an empty gap in her hear in search of romance that she has always long er for yet never grasped. She seems to do this by committing such unfaithful acts. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ but i always relish the upheaval; I do love being on the move. â⬠This quote emphasizes the fact that Emma cannot stay with one decision or be in one place for a long period of time because she is easily bored and dissatisfied. Once Leon leaves Mme. Bovary has an understanding of her feelings for Leon and her regret for not pursuing these feelings. the bad days form Tostes came back again. â⬠[p. 114] Emma then realizes the option of adultery and Leon was the one to open this idea up to her. This is what leads her to commit adultery later on in this section of the novel. The second major development is the love affair between Mme. Bovary and Rodolphe. This love affair fulfills the dream of the romance she has always longed for from the books that she has read. ââ¬Å"She merged onto her own imaginings, played a real part, realizing the long dream of her youth, seeing herself as one of those great lovers she had so long envied! â⬠[p. 51] This quote emphasizes Emmaââ¬â¢s happiness and sense of accomplishment that she feels during the affair. This is a development in her character because this can be compared to previous areas in the book where she was bored and unhappy waiting for something to occur this sudden even has now changed this view on life to a more happy one. This is because there was now an aspect of excitement that allows her to experience her dreams that she has so long longed for which causes her to isolate herself from reality. This is seen when she wants to run away with Rodolphe ââ¬Å"Take me away! â⬠[p. 80] This also shows Emmaââ¬â¢s selfish behavior because she is acting only to please herself while Charles sacrifices his love and lets Emma be with Rodolphe to treat her depression (illness). The final major development in Emma is when she is plunged back into reality with the letter the Rodolphe sends her. This letter a llows her to realize the difference between the romantic novels and dreams and reality. The fact that she had so many ideas to pursue with Rodolphe such as running away which she though would allow her total freedom. However these longings are all crushed and the caged feeling from before begins to come back again. why have not done with it? Who was to stop her? She was freeâ⬠This quote shows her thoughts of running away with Rodolphe and how she want to be free. In conclusion these major developments such as the love for Leon and the introduction to the idea of adultery as well as the affair with Rodolphe and the longing for freedom show Madame Bovaryââ¬â¢s change throughout part two of the novel. One is also able to see the constant unstable actions of Emma and her decisions. She is one to go from being spiritual to wanting to commit suicide, then desiring a proper family household and yet none of these make her happy for very long.
